Local Housing Registers

Housing Registers are lists kept by Borough or District Councils of people wanting rented social housing. Most Borough councils have a system in which all local Housing Associations are partners in the Register. New tenants for the Housing Associations will be selected from the Housing Register which the Borough Council manages. Registers are not published and the council and their partners will protect applicants' personal information. Borough Councils are committed to fair housing and should not discriminate against someone because of their colour, race, nationality, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, age, gender or disability.
Housing registers are open to applications from anyone aged 16 years or over with a housing need, although there are some exceptions, such as if a person has deliberately made themselves homeless.
Housing is provided on a priority basis. This means those who are in most urgent need will be housed first. Most Borough Councils operate a "choice based lettings scheme" in which people are given a banding and can then bid on properties that they are interested in, usually via a website.
Most districts have a shortage of social housing, so it is likely that most people will have a long wait. But, if you don't register, how will the council know how many people are waiting?
