Telecare Fact Sheet
Telecare is technology that can support people with learning disabilities and their carers 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year providing peace of mind and independence. YOU are excited to be providing this service in partnership with Hampshire County Council
What is telecare?
Telecare consists of various sensors placed around the home which are either linked to a control unit connected to a telephone line or home pager system. When a sensor is activated an alarm is triggered which sends an emergency call through to either the monitoring centre or to the carer’s pager. If a call goes to the monitoring centre it will be dealt with by trained operators who will find out what the problem is and send the necessary help. This could involve contacting the emergency services, a mobile response service, or a relative who lives close by.
Telecare is not intended to replace people but to work with them.

Case Study – how telecare can help
Jane, like 50% of people with learning disabilities, also has epilepsy which resulted in her having several seizures during the night. Jane’s mum, Carol used to sleep in the same room as her daughter, so she could check throughout the night if Jane was OK. This meant Carol had not had a good nights sleep in years, as she was worried what would happened if she slept through Jane having a seizure.
Solution: An epilepsy sensor, which raises an alert when she has a seizure, was fitted in Jane’s bed. This let Mum return to her own room, as a pillow alert was placed under her pillow which linked to her daughter’s epilepsy sensor. This vibrates to wake Carol up when Jane has a seizure so that she help.
Outcome: Carol is able to have a restful sleep knowing she will be woken only if there is problem and no longer feels constantly tired. At the same time Jane has now got increased privacy as she no longer has to share her bedroom with her Mum.
